Following an 8-3 loss to Switzerland, Canada’s Team Gushue responded with a 10-6 win over team Italy in their 7 pm game.

“We were just a little sharper this evening. I mean, we weren’t far off earlier today, too, so it’s getting closer. Still some things we need to tidy up, but it’s still early, and the biggest thing is, is we won, so that’s a positive,” E.J. Harnden said in a media scrum following the game against Italy.

Team Canada opened the Italy match with the hammer and scored two points in the first end. The second end resulted in neither team picking up a point, but with Italy having the hammer, they managed to tie the game up by the third end.

Canada would score points in the next two ends to give them a 5-2 lead entering the sixth end. Italy responded in the sixth end with two points to bring the score up to 5-4, but with Canada having the hammer in the seventh, they put up a big three points for an 8-4 lead. Italy would be trailing by two by the end of the eighth end, but Canada ended the game in the ninth end as they finished with a 10-6 victory.

Although Team Gushue went 1-1 on the first day of the tournament, he said it’s ideal to win the second game of the day if you lose the first.

“You walk out of the day feeling better, but ideally, we would have loved to have been 2-0 but that was out of our control. So, to go out there against a really, really good team and win tonight, and get ourselves back to 1-1, I’m happy, it was a good rebound,” Gushue said.

On the second day of the tournament, Sunday, April 2, Canada will be facing off against New Zealand at 2 pm and Norway at 7 pm.

“We play New Zealand first, we played them at the Pan-Con Medal, and a good, young team, they can make some shots, and we’re going to have to make sure we play strong against them,” Gushue said.

“And then Norway is a great team. I think they’re probably the most underrated team here this week, I feel like they’re a team that’s going to be a battle for a playoff spot, and we played them a couple times over the last few years and they’ve always played as tough, so that one’s going to be a challenge as well.”
